Swaffham Bulbeck Lode
The north east bank only from the River Cam to the
Cow Bridge, Swaffham Bulbeck..
Recent fish surveys by
the Environmental
Agency of the stock of fish in the Lode revealed very few sizeable fish
with many eels and lots of small Pike. Both of these species
predate on either/or spawn and fry. The lack of sizeable fish was
due to a loss of fish under the lock gates, when 2 years ago a log
became jammed under the lock gate. The water level dropped
so low it was only an inch deep at the Cow Bridge and only 9" deep
at the lock gate. Gulls then ate the stranded fish.

The Waterbeach Angling Club,
Swaffham Parish Council and the Environmental Agency have agreed a
management plan which involves removing the predators and restocking
with mature fish so they will breed this summer. The club will not
fish the water for 2 years to allow the new stock fish proliferate.
In January and February this year,
as last year, The Agencies fishery team will be removing Eels and small
Pike to again reduce the predator population.
The club looks forward to the
future on this fishery.
